Study Permit

In Canada, certain educational programmes require students to do a co-op or internship work placement as part of their studies. You may be able to work full-time for part of your studies if you complete the conditions for a co-op or intern work visa.

You may be qualified to work part-time or full-time if you are currently enrolled in full-time study at a Canadian educational institution.

Holders of a study permit are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week or full-time during a designated break. As a Canadian study permit holder, you do not need to apply for a separate work permit to work part-time. However, you must declare that you are authorised to work in Canada on your study permit. You can request to have your study permit changed if you are eligible to work but your study permit does not say that you are allowed to work or accept employment in Canada.

How long does your study permit last?

A study permit normally lasts for the duration of your programme plus an additional 90 days. The 90-day period allows you to do one of two things:

  • Prepare to leave Canada
  • Apply for a stay extension.

The length of time you can stay in Canada after you finish your education is determined by whether you are a student or a professional.

  • You're enrolled in prerequisite classes.
  • Before you finish your education, your study permission will expire.
  • Your studies will be completed before your study permission expires.
